HSE University International Olympiad — 2027 entry

HSE University

HSE uses this olympiad to select international applicants for Russian government quota places (tuition-free study) at bachelor's and master's level. Registration on the Sodruzhestvo platform runs from 1 November 2026 to 2 February 2027, and winners and prize-winners receive a recommendation to compete for a quota place.

The olympiad is open to foreign nationals and stateless persons. The bachelor's and specialist track is for pupils in grades 10–11 of an 11-year school system, or grades 11–12 of a 12-year system. The master's track is for bachelor's or specialist degree graduates. If you are studying, or have studied, on a quota place at the level you are applying to, you cannot compete for a quota place at that level again.

The opportunity

What is this olympiad?

The HSE University International Olympiad (Международная олимпиада НИУ ВШЭ) is how HSE selects international applicants for Russian government quota places, which cover tuition in full. For 2027 entry it runs on the Sodruzhestvo platform with two directories: 80 profiles for school pupils and 128 master's profiles for university graduates.

A profile is one degree programme at one campus, with its own registration page on the platform. These figures count competition profiles, not scholarships or places.

The platform describes the olympiad as entirely online, while HSE's own page mentions taking part online or at in-person venues in your country, with dates and addresses to be published later. Check the format on your profile page.

👯 Not the same as the International Youth Olympiad (МОМ): МОМ closed registration on 29 October 2026 and has its own page, as do the Higher League (Высшая лига), the Vysshaya Proba olympiad, Open Doors and quota applications through the Russian House in your country. None of the dates on this page apply to them.

What it leads to

What do the results give you?

🏛️ A recommendation to compete for a quota place — according to HSE's page, winners and prize-winners receive one and use it to compete for a tuition-free place at bachelor's or master's level.
🥇 Winners and prize-winners are not in the same position — HSE St Petersburg's bachelor's instructions say a winner's diploma holder competes for a quota place and may be enrolled on the programme they won, while a prize-winner goes on the reserve list.
🎓 A quota place means no tuition fees for the whole programme, plus a small monthly stipend (see Funding).

⚠️ A recommendation does not guarantee enrolment or funding. Each programme has a limited number of funded places and selection is competitive, so funding is not guaranteed even for winners. Tuition-free study does not cover living costs, travel or insurance.

What the official documents say

📊How is your application assessed?

Bachelor's and specialist track: tests in subjects set by each profile. Profile pages say the final score is the total across all the tests, and some programmes may add an interview or another test. First-round subjects as the profile pages list them:
CampusWhat the profiles test
Moscow (50 profiles)Russian language in every profile, plus a second subject: mathematics (23 profiles); English or history, depending on the profile (7); English (6); chemistry, biology or physics (5); history (4); a creative task (3); a choice of two subjects (2)
St Petersburg (21 profiles)one subject in the first round: mathematics (11); English (3); Russian language (3); history (2); physics (1); a creative project (1)
Perm (7) and Nizhny Novgorod (2)subjects not named in the public description (six Perm profiles only mention “timed tasks in several subjects”)
St Petersburg has two rounds: a qualifying test, then a final test. Anyone scoring below the minimum in the first round does not go through to the second; the minimum has not been published yet. If you choose more than one profile there, you must sit the tests for every subject in all the profiles you chose.
Master's track: a portfolio. The master's directory lists 128 profiles: Moscow 98, St Petersburg 24, Nizhny Novgorod 4, Perm 2. Profile pages say the final score follows each profile's own document-assessment criteria, and some programmes may add an interview or tests.
Example: the Economics and Management profiles of “Data Analytics for Business and Economics” in St Petersburg start with a mathematics test, followed by a portfolio and interview.
Selection criteria and weightings for 2027 entry have not been published yet — HSE's page says they “will be published later”. So we show no weightings or pass marks, and we don't rely on the 2025 or 2026 tables for programmes such as Data Science or International Management.

📎What do you upload?

1. To register for any profile: an identity document and an education document (a school certificate or statement, or a university diploma or statement for master's profiles).
2. The assessed master's portfolio: the application form, a document confirming your level of education, a motivation letter and a CV. You may also add recommendation letters, additional education documents, evidence of publications or presentations at academic seminars and conferences, international scholarships or grants, and other documents. Page or word limits, the language of writing and file formats have not been published for 2027 profiles — check your programme's requirements on the platform.
3. After winning — St Petersburg bachelor's (19 February – 23 March 2027): winner's diploma holders submit the documents below, each with a notarised Russian translation if issued in another language:
1) A scan of the completed application form (the template is sent to participants) with a 3×4 photo — colour or black-and-white, matte — in the top right corner, and your signature.
2) Your school-leaving certificate; if you don't have it yet, a statement from your school with first-semester grades.
3) A medical certificate confirming no contraindications to study (form 086-у or your country's equivalent), including a full health assessment; valid for 12 months.
4) A certificate confirming you are free of HIV and AIDS; valid for 12 months.
5) A certificate confirming you are free of hepatitis B and C and tuberculosis; valid for 12 months. Vaccination cards are not accepted.
6) The pages of the passport you will use to enter Russia, valid for at least 18 months from your expected entry date; that date cannot be earlier than 1 September 2027.
This list is published for St Petersburg bachelor's applicants; check the list for your own campus and track. Recognition of your qualification is a separate procedure from translation and legalisation, and its requirements depend on the issuing country.

🗣️Language

Every school-track profile in Moscow includes a Russian language test, so prepare for it if you are applying to a Moscow programme.
Keep three things apart: the language of instruction (from the programme description), the language of the test or interview (from the profile page) and the language of your motivation letter and portfolio (from the programme's requirements). The platform's interface language is a personal setting and changes none of these.
In the 2026 cycle (the previous application system), HSE asked graduate applicants for TOEFL, IELTS or CAE results no more than two years old, unless they were native English speakers or graduates of an English-medium institution. No such requirement appears on the 2027 profile pages, so check your programme's requirements.

💸Funding: what a quota place covers

ItemDetails
TuitionNo tuition fees for the whole programme.
Monthly stipendHSE St Petersburg's scholarship page: about 2,200 roubles. Its master's page: 2,100 roubles, awarded for good academic performance. No single figure has been published for 2027 entry, and either way it does not cover living costs.
AccommodationNot free. Quota students are among those eligible for places in HSE's Moscow dormitories, where the average fee is 2,000 roubles a month; rules differ between campuses.
Health insuranceYou must buy voluntary health insurance valid in Russia before you arrive.
Travel, medical checks, visa, preparatory yearThe sources do not say these are covered by the olympiad; check your admission offer.
Fee discounts on paid contracts are a separate route with their own regulation, and we have not confirmed which version applies to 2027 entry, so we don't list the percentages here. The enhanced academic scholarship is likewise applied for after enrolment and is not an admission benefit.

⏳Not announced yet

Selection criteria, weightings and pass marks for each profile, and the detailed test timetable.
A maximum number of profiles per applicant: neither platform directory sets one; the familiar two-programme limit belonged to the 2026 application system.
The monthly stipend for 2027 entry at each campus, and actual dormitory fees at each campus.
The PhD track: HSE's page mentions it for specialist and master's graduates through a separate competitive selection, but no timetable has been published.
HSE's page says applications for tuition-free study close in March 2027, without a specific day; this does not change the olympiad registration deadline (2 February 2027).

Common questions

Tap any question to open the answer ▾

💬Is this the same as the МОМ olympiad?

No. МОМ, the International Youth Olympiad, is a different competition whose registration closed on 29 October 2026. This page covers the international admissions olympiad on the Sodruzhestvo platform, which opened on 1 November 2026.

💬Do “128 profiles” mean 128 scholarships?

No. They are competition profiles linked to programmes. Each programme has a limited number of funded places, which the directories do not publish.

💬Can I apply to more than one programme?

Yes, but each programme needs a separate registration and its own form, and in St Petersburg you sit the tests for every profile you chose. Neither platform directory sets a maximum number of profiles.

💬Does winning guarantee a scholarship?

No. Winning gives you a recommendation to compete for a quota place; in St Petersburg winners compete for a place and prize-winners go on the reserve list. Enrolment then still depends on the funding decision, the ministry's referral where required, and the enrolment order.

💬Do I need Russian?

Every school-track profile in Moscow includes a Russian language test. Elsewhere, the profile page and the programme description tell you; the platform's interface language does not decide the language of assessment.

💬How much is the monthly stipend?

No single figure has been published for 2027 entry: HSE St Petersburg's scholarship page gives about 2,200 roubles, and its master's page 2,100 roubles for good academic performance. It is a token amount that does not cover living costs.

💬Does this replace applying through the Russian House?

They are two different routes to a quota place, each with its own procedure and dates. The dates on this page do not apply to applications through Rossotrudnichestvo in your country.
