The Sechenov Olympiad in Biology and Chemistry
A strong academic opportunity for school students interested in medicine, pharmacy and life sciences — run by Sechenov University (I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University) in biology and chemistry. Registration for the 2026/27 season closed on 29 October 2026 at 23:59 Moscow time. The 2026/27 regulations include students studying abroad and accept a foreign citizen's passport as the identity document.

Official file (PDF) ↗Registration ran from 1 October 2026 to 29 October 2026 at 23:59 Moscow time on reg.sechenov.ru — per the organiser's official timetable and the 2026/27 Регламент (§2.1.1). That window was for registering in the subjects and in the first stage together — so anyone who missed it cannot enter the qualifying stage at all, even though the stage itself takes place in November. 🟢 If you registered: the qualifying stage opens on 10 November 2026 at 00:01 and closes on 30 November 2026 at 23:59 Moscow time — this (2026/27) is the current season, even though registration has closed. 🔴 The organiser's instructions say registration is done afresh every year, and accounts from previous years are not valid — taking part before does not exempt you from registering again.

International students are eligible according to the official list (the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's 2026/27 school-students list). Admission benefits themselves vary by programme, track and admission rules.
🌍 Foreign students: international participation is officially documented in the latest completed edition, 2025/26. The organiser published its list of final-stage venues, including 6 venues outside Russia — Almaty (Kazakhstan) · Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) · Khujand (Tajikistan) · Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) · Tashkent (Uzbekistan) · Erdenet (Mongolia) — alongside 17 venues inside Russia. Sechenov also described a specific mechanism for the results of foreign year-11 students through the «Интеробразование» system. And the 2026/27 regulations are published: they include "those studying these programmes abroad", and state that the identity document is "the general passport or a foreign citizen's passport for foreign citizens". But final-stage registration asks you to upload your identity document and a СНИЛС number (the Russian social-insurance number), and the regulations do not say whether a foreigner is exempt — so if you don't have a СНИЛС, ask the organisers before the final.
🏛️ Also: the olympiad is number 18 on the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's approved school-students list for 2026/27 — the list whose own title says it covers olympiads whose winners and prize-winners may apply for study within the Russian Government quota for foreign citizens and stateless persons — a possibility to apply, not a nomination or a place.
🔴 But mind this difference — it's the most important line on the page: eligibility to take part is one thing, and an admission benefit is something else entirely. Sechenov's own admission benefit is the right to 100 points — not admission without an exam, and it depends on a matching exam score. Read "What does the winner get?" below — it uses the document's exact wording.
These opportunities usually open each season — but next season's date isn't officially confirmed yet. As soon as it's confirmed by the official source we'll update this page and send you an alert.

A school-students' olympiad in biology and chemistry, run by Sechenov University — the First Moscow State Medical University (Первый МГМУ им. И.М. Сеченова) — through its "Impulse" Institute of Specialised Education (Институт профильного обучения «Импульс») and its olympiads and conferences department.
It is an official academic olympiad on the Russian olympiads list (перечневая олимпиада), at level 2 in biology and chemistry — that is the university's own description of the 2025/26 edition, and the final list for 2026/27 (Ministry of Science Order No. 521 of 31 August 2026) confirmed level 2 in both subjects. The list is issued by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and universities build special admission rights on the olympiads in it — each under its own rules.
And the contest is not small: in the last completed edition (2025/26) the qualifying stage drew 7,671 students in biology and 5,159 in chemistry, and the final stage reached 1,094 in biology and 527 in chemistry — that is more than 1,500 students in the final, across venues inside and outside Russia.
🩺 Why does this matter for a future medical student specifically? Because it isn't a general olympiad: its two subjects are exactly the subjects medical, pharmacy and life-science faculties compete on, and the organiser is a medical university that says openly that continuously seeking talented students is part of how it recruits. So this olympiad is a direct measure of your level in the two subjects you'll enter medicine with, before you build an application plan.
What does the winner get?
🔴 Read these four before you build a plan on it:
① This is not a "Sechenov scholarship" or study funding. The olympiad is a competition, and the right granted is a score in an admission exam — not money paid to you or a reserved place.
② And "100 points" is not "admission without an exam". The same document states: «Право приема без вступительных испытаний по результатам олимпиад школьников Университетом не предоставляется» — meaning the university does not grant admission without entrance exams on the basis of school-olympiad results at all.
③ The benefit is conditional, not automatic. Without at least 75 points in the ЕГЭ or the general internal exam in the same subject, the benefit does not apply — winning alone is not enough.
④ And winning is not guaranteed admission. Admission is competitive, depends on available places, each university's rules and the applicant's status, and being on the Ministry list means a possibility to apply within the quota — not a place, funding or a guaranteed nomination.

How to register
Registration ran from 1 to 29 October 2026 Moscow time, and the form is filled in Russian. The steps below are taken from the official instructions file "How to register for the olympiad" published on the organiser's "Instructions" page (in the format of the last edition, 2025/26), which the organiser updates every season — so check it when the window opens:
🔴 The СНИЛС number and foreign students: the 2026/27 regulations (§4.3.1) require, at final-stage registration, uploading images of your identity document and a СНИЛС number (the Russian social-insurance number), and the account form in the last edition's instructions asked for it too. A foreign student living outside Russia usually doesn't have one, and the regulations do not say what replaces it — although they accept a foreign citizen's passport as the identity document (§4.4). So ask the organiser (6229648@staff.sechenov.ru) before you register.
📄 The exact document list appears inside the form itself — check it at registration. We haven't added any step of our own: every line above is from the official instructions file.
🔗 The registration portal: the new account is created on reg.sechenov.ru («Создать учетную запись»), and in the form you choose «Профиль олимпиады»: chemistry, biology or both — the form was working on 2 October 2026.

Olympiad stages
A new personal account + a complete form + choosing the olympiad profile (biology, chemistry or both). Registration starts from scratch every year.
Remote in the personal account per the 2026/27 regulations — a 180-minute test, and you choose your own start time within the window.
Marking 1–4 December, preliminary results 8 December, appeals 11 December, and final first-stage results 18 December with the winning criteria.
In person on a single day at the University and regional venues per the 2026/27 regulations, and the day and venues haven't been announced yet. Final-stage registration is separate, in the personal account, closes 3 days before, and asks for your identity document and a СНИЛС number.
🔴 The difference you need to understand: the first stage's dates are announced to the day, while the final is announced as a window and a format (in person between 1 February and 1 April 2027) with the day and venues still to come. So plan for the first stage with confidence, and watch the organiser's page for the final.
Also: the olympiad is two separate subjects — if you registered for biology only, that result has nothing to do with the chemistry track. The form itself lets you choose one subject or both from the start.
Subjects
The two subjects the olympiad covers — each with its own years and separate track:
Who can take part?
These years are per the last completed edition, 2025/26 (the university's official statement and the registration instructions file). The 2026/27 regulations are published on the olympiad page — check your year there before registering.
The organiser has not published a separate age limit; eligibility is tied to the school year, not age.
International participation is officially documented in the latest completed edition, 2025/26: final venues were held outside Russia in six countries, and Sechenov described a specific mechanism for foreign year-11 students' results via the «Интеробразование» system. The 2026/27 regulations include students studying abroad and accept a foreign citizen's passport — note that final-stage registration asks for a СНИЛС number, so ask the organisers if you don't have one.
The Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's school-students list for 2026/27 — which, by its own title, concerns the quota for educating foreign citizens and stateless persons in Russia.
The olympiad's language is Russian per the 2026/27 regulations, and there is no English track. Try the official trainers yourself before deciding.
Your eligibility to take part is one thing; using the result for admission is another, subject to each university's rules and the quota rules. Read the "What does the winner get?" box carefully.

💬When is registration?
It closed on 29 October 2026 at 23:59 Moscow time.
The official 2026/27 timetable: registration from 1 October 2026 at 00:01 to 29 October 2026 at 23:59, and the first stage 10 – 30 November.
That window was for registering in the olympiad and the first stage together. So anyone who didn't register cannot enter the qualifying stage held in November.
💬I'm a foreign student — can I take part?
International participation is officially documented in the latest completed edition, 2025/26.
The organiser published its list of final-stage venues, with 6 venues outside Russia (Kazakhstan · Kyrgyzstan · Tajikistan · Turkmenistan · Uzbekistan · Mongolia) alongside 17 venues inside Russia. Sechenov also described a specific mechanism for the results of foreign year-11 students through the «Интеробразование» system.
🏛️ The olympiad is also number 18 on the Ministry of Science list for 2026/27, whose own title ties it to the quota for educating foreign citizens and stateless persons in Russia.
📄 The 2026/27 regulations include "those studying these programmes abroad" and accept a foreign citizen's passport as the identity document. ⚠️ But final-stage registration asks you to upload a СНИЛС number (the Russian insurance number), and the regulations don't say what a foreigner uses instead — so ask the organisers before you register.
💬Does winning mean I'll get into Sechenov for free?
No. This is the most important answer on the page, so take it in full.
① The officially published benefit is the right to 100 points — the winner or prize-winner is treated as having scored 100 in the entrance exam for the matching subject (biology or chemistry). That's an exam score, not a place or funding.
② And it's conditional: you need at least 75 points in the ЕГЭ or the general internal exam in the same subject, and the winning result must be from year 10 or 11. Otherwise the benefit doesn't apply.
③ And it's not "admission without an exam": the same admission document states that the university does not grant admission without entrance exams on the basis of school-olympiad results.
④ And admission itself is competitive, depending on available places, the university's rules and the applicant's status.
Bottom line: a real, strong advantage in the competition — but not a scholarship or a place.
💬What is «Интеробразование»? Does it guarantee me anything?
It's a possibility, not a guarantee.
Sechenov University's official statement says the olympiad organisers themselves submit the results of year-11 students from foreign countries to the «Интеробразование» system, and thanks to this, foreign citizens can receive a «направление» to study at one of the Russian universities from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
🔴 "Can" — not "will". The source speaks of a possibility, and does not promise a guaranteed scholarship, guaranteed admission or a reserved quota place, nor does it limit the destination to Sechenov itself (the text says "one of the Russian universities").
🧩 And it's a completely separate route from Sechenov's right to 100 points — don't mix them up.
💬Is the exam online or in person? Can I take it from my country?
Not all of it.
The qualifying stage is remote per the 2026/27 regulations — a test in your personal account from wherever you are.
The final is in person on one day between 1 February and 1 April 2027, at the University and regional venues — and the venue list hasn't been published yet. In 2025/26 the venues were inside and outside Russia.
⚠️ Don't assume you can sit the final from your country: the venues abroad in the last edition were in six countries only, and the 2026/27 venues haven't been announced yet.
💬I'm in year 9 — is this olympiad useful for me?
It is, but differently from a year-11 student.
Biology accepts from year 5, and chemistry from year 8 (per the last completed edition). So you're eligible for both subjects.
But the admission benefit is another matter: Sechenov's admission rules require the winning result to be from year 10 or 11, and the officially described «Интеробразование» mechanism is for foreign year-11 students.
The university's statement says winners from years 5–9 receive places at summer and science schools and trips to the «Орлёнок» and «Сириус» centres.
So treat it now as real practice and level-building — the bigger reward comes when you enter it in year 10 or 11.
💬What language is the exam in?
Russian — per the 2026/27 regulations («Рабочим языком проведения Олимпиады является русский язык»), and the registration form is filled in Russian.
What we saw ourselves: the official trainers from past seasons are all in Russian, as are the regulations, instructions and results, and the personal-account portal.
⚠️ No English track is published — and we won't invent one. If you need a definitive answer, ask the organiser before registering.
💬I took part last year — do I use the same account?
No. The official registration instructions say that registration is done afresh every year, and accounts from previous years are not valid.
So you need a new account in the registration window (1–29 October 2026), to complete the form, and to choose the olympiad profile from the start.
💬Are these dates final?
The first-stage dates are officially published for 2026/27 on the organiser's page, and we verified them on 8 September 2026.
For the final stage, the 2026/27 regulations (Положение / Регламент) set the window and the format: in person on one day between 1 February and 1 April 2027 — the exact day and the venues haven't been announced yet.
So check the official page before each stage — the link is in the "Official sources" section above.

The 2026/27 regulations (read 28 September 2026) set the final in person between 1 February and 1 April 2027 — the day and venues haven't been announced yet, and anything marked "2025/26" is from the last completed edition and may change. This is not a "Sechenov scholarship", study funding or a guaranteed place; the olympiad is competitive and winning is not guaranteed, the right to 100 points depends on a matching exam score and is not admission without an exam, and submitting results to «Интеробразование» is a possibility, not a guarantee, and not limited to Sechenov (the source says "one of the Russian universities").
